Five marathons in five days

Running a marathon is no easy task, especially when you are doing five in five days, but that is exactly what these two brothers set out to do in July.

Josh, 21, and Jaydn, 19, ran five marathons – each running 42 kilometres per day between them (a half marathon each). They ran 211 kilometres in total, alongside the Murray River in their hometown, Renmark, which is around three hours out of Adelaide.

Josh and Jaydn’s mum was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013, which is what prompted the boys to run the marathons.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition of the central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

“I always wanted to do something to raise money for multiple sclerosis after Mum was diagnosed in 2013. My brother and I are both naturally fit and good runners, so we thought this was an achievable goal but would still be extremely difficult,” Josh said as to what inspired the idea of running five marathons in five days.

Even more remarkable is that neither Josh or Jaydn had ever run a marathon before they embarked on this journey.

Josh and Jaydn raised money for the Multiple Sclerosis SA/NT society, which helps support people living with MS in South Australia and the Northern Territory. 

“We ended up raising a little over $18,000 which is more than we could have possibly imagined we would have raised when we started.”

“Our initial goal was $5,000 so to be able to more than triple that is absolutely amazing.”

Josh said the support that he also received from so many people absolutely blew him away.

“The support we received from the Renmark community as well as the people I have met in Adelaide truly blew us away.”

“Without them it would have been so much harder as they either ran or rode with us on every leg, which gave us different people to talk to, helping us get through the really tough periods,” he added.

The lead up to the event was like most typical marathons. Josh said he was running almost every day for months on end.

“In the months leading up to the marathons, I covered lots and lots of kilometres. I was running more than ten kilometres pretty much every day and would go for longer runs a couple of times a week.”

“We also made sure that we were eating properly and looking after our bodies in the lead up to the event,” Josh added.

Josh and Jaydn set a recovery routine after they completed each run, to make sure that their bodies were fit and ready to go the day after.

“We made sure that we were eating extremely well and drinking heaps of water during the run and also the nights after we finished,” Josh said.

They also stretched and did foam rolls after each race, making sure their legs were as ready as they could be for the next day.

 “We also had Radox baths each night, using bath salts to help our muscles relax and prepare for the next day,” Josh said.

Running a single marathon is exultingly hard, so it’s no wonder that Josh and Jaydn struggled on some days but evidently pushing through, raising money all for a good cause.  

“The hardest day was definitely the middle day as that’s when our bodies really started to hurt, and we weren’t even half way yet.”

 “The last two days got easier as we knew that we were over halfway and were closer to finishing than we were starting.”

As for more marathons in the future, Josh only had one answer for that question.

“After these runs, I really want to do a solo marathon at some point in the near future,” Josh said.
